### About Backbone version numbers
From Backbone 2.x onwards, source code versions follow [semantic versioning](https://semver.org/) numbers in the form `MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH`. The first major number is changed when there are changes to the input data that require users to update their input data files. Increasing the minor version number tells about added functionality and increasing patch version bug fixes. Both `MINOR` and `PATCH` are compatible with their `MAJOR` version, but not necessarily with higher or lower major version.
